A publicly listed company from Beijing, deeply engaged in the biomedicine sector with businesses spanning medical devices, drug development, and related technical services, approached SIG seeking professional service support.
After taking on the project, SIG found that the client had provided very limited information—only a general overview of their business direction, without specifying exact registration classes, resulting in broad and ambiguous coverage. Rather than rushing to submit, the SIG team began with basic search analysis. The consultants systematically reviewed the original registration materials item by item, examining trademark descriptions, goods and services classifications, terminology standards, and logical consistency.
For any service provider, this represented an intense challenge. Trademark registration involves 45 major classes, each containing hundreds of sub-items. While each step is not inherently complex, it demands a high level of accuracy and professional judgment. The SIG team proactively assumed the role of “preliminary evaluator” rather than simply executing tasks. The consultants conducted an in-depth review of the client’s product forms, technical functions, and business model, systematically analyzing the relationships between their medical devices, drug attributes, and related services, and used this analysis to identify the key classes truly necessary for registration. Additionally, SIG prepared a detailed analytical report, providing clear justification for each class selection and explaining why each class is directly or potentially relevant to the client’s actual business.
During the selection process, SIG further compared existing similar trademarks in the market, conducted risk analyses for those with high similarity, and provided the client with professional recommendations. To minimize potential disputes, the SIG team also assisted the client in preparing supplementary explanatory documents, strengthening the stability of the registration from the outset. Ultimately, after fully understanding the risks and rationale, the Beijing parent company formally approved the Singapore entity to proceed with the registration for the selected classes.
After SIG and the client confirmed the application details, the submission was made to the authorities. The official examination proceeded smoothly, without any objections. The project was approved in a single attempt, with both efficiency and results exceeding the client’s expectations. Notably, to date, none of the trademarks handled by SIG have faced litigation or disputes, further validating their service methodology of emphasizing careful judgment, thorough preparation, and attention to detail.
For the client, this was not only a successful trademark registration but also a crucial step in ensuring the compliant entry of their biomedicine business into the Singaporean and regional markets. For SIG, it represents a quintessential case demonstrating the integration of professional expertise, patience, and responsibility.
