Singapore PR: More Complex Than It Seems!

In recent years, Singapore has attracted global talent with its prime geographical location, advanced economic system, and high-quality living standards. However, as the demand for Singapore residency soars, various scams and misinformation have surfaced, causing many to fall victim. This article unravels these scams to help you gain a clear understanding of Singapore’s work visas and Permanent Resident (PR) application process.

Common Scams and Misleading Claims

  1. “Get PR in 48 Hours!”
When the Singapore government announced a shortage occupation list, some immigration agencies quickly seized the opportunity, flooding social media with exaggerated advertisements claiming “shortcuts to Singapore PR.”

These ads have drawn significant attention from individuals eager to migrate. Some even falsely claim that paying a specific fee guarantees PR approval within 48 hours. These tactics, often resembling pyramid schemes, have lured many unsuspecting individuals.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has repeatedly debunked such claims, emphasizing that the PR application process is strict and cannot be expedited. Yet, scams surrounding PR and work visa applications continue to persist.

  1. “Study and Get PR Automatically”
Certain agencies claim that passing national exams like the O-Level in Singapore and studying for two years guarantees PR.

While passing national exams and completing at least two years of study in Singapore are policy requirements related to PR eligibility, these conditions alone do not grant PR. Instead, they provide eligibility to apply for PR. Applicants must understand this distinction to avoid being misled.

  1. “Pay to Get Work Permits / Employment Passes and PR”
Some agencies promise that paying a fee can secure WP/EP and eventually PR. This is another scam.

Work permit / Employment Pass applications in Singapore must meet specific criteria, such as educational qualifications and work experience. PR applications require a holistic assessment, making it impossible to obtain approval through payment alone.

Legitimate Ways to Obtain Singapore PR

After understanding these scams, let’s explore the six official pathways to apply for PR in Singapore, as outlined by ICA:

(Source: ICA)

  1. Spouse of a Singapore Citizen or PR: Spouses can apply through their Singaporean or PR partner.
  2. Child of a Singapore Citizen or PR: Unmarried children under 21, born or legally adopted within a legal marriage, can apply through their parent.
  3. Parent of a Singapore Citizen: Applications must be submitted by the Singaporean child. This pathway has strict eligibility criteria.
  4. Investor Scheme: Requires an investment of at least SGD 10 million (approximately RMB 54 million). This high threshold mainly targets high-net-worth individuals.
  5. Skilled Migrants: Foreigners holding Employment Pass (EP) or S Pass (SP) may apply for PR through this route. Applicants must have professional skills and work experience.
    • Two subcategories:
      • Individuals seeking employment independently and applying for PR after securing the appropriate permit.
      • Self-employed individuals applying for an EP through self-employment, followed by PR.
  6. Student Pathway: Requires students to study in Singapore and pass at least one national exam or attend integrated programs. This pathway is only applicable to unemployed students.

However, meeting these criteria only provides eligibility to apply. All applications undergo ICA’s rigorous evaluation. Beware of agencies that falsely promise guaranteed approvals.

Conclusion

In summary, applying for Singapore PR is a complex and stringent process. Applicants must thoroughly understand the various pathways, requirements, and procedures while staying vigilant to avoid scams. Following legitimate methods and staying informed are key to successfully obtaining Singapore PR.
